This page provides links to Internet information on cancer support for cancer patients, both adults and children, and their families.

The Williamsburg Regional Library provides a variety of cancer-related resources and services for adults and children, including both circulating and reference books and audiovisual materials.

Local support and advocacy groups

Cancer Care, Inc.
Cancer Care offers free assistance to people with any type of cancer, including counseling and emotional support, information on cancer and treatment, referrals to other support services, educational seminars and materials, financial consultation, and programs for health care professionals.  Additionally, Cancer Care provides "Special Needs" programs for patients whose cancer needs are affected by age, social setting, or other illness.
 
CancerFatigue.org
CancerFatigue.org, designed by the Oncology Nursing Society, provides patients with information on managing cancer treatment related symptoms such as fatigue, anorexia, pain, depression, neutropenia, and cognitive dysfunction.
 
Corporate Angel Network
The Corporate Angel Network provides free air transportation for cancer patients traveling to and from recognized cancer treatment centers in the U.S. Their web page details the guidelines for participation, and has information on how to become a corporate participant.
Fertile Hope
Fertile Hope is a non-profit organization that offers financial support and help for cancer patients faced with infertility.
 
GriefNet
Grief Net provides support for for bereaved persons and those working with the bereaved.  The web site has access to grief resources for both adults and children, resources for caregivers, including information on hospice and homecare, a list of conferences and meetings, and links to other Internet resources.  Grief Net also sponsors a variety of online mailing lists, support groups, and discussion groups.
 
Home Care Guide for Advanced Cancer
Published by the American College of Physicians, this online guide is an excellent resource for those dealing with end-of-life issues related to cancer.
 
Kids Konnected
Kids Konnected was established to provide "friendship, understanding, education, and support for kids have a parent with cancer." The organization provides a 24-hour hotline seven days a week for children of cancer patients, an e-mail resource center to answer children's cancer questions, and a bibliography of cancer-related materials for parents, teens, and children.
 
Legal Information Network for Cancer
The Legal Information Network for Cancer (LINC) provides information to help cancer patients and their families resolve non-medical issues related to cancer.  LINC serves the Central Virginia community with assistance on insurance claims; eligibility for benefits; employment rights; wills, powers of attorney, and medical directives; and aid finding legal representation.
 
National Lymphedema Network
The National Lymphedema Network's website provides education and guidance to lymphedema patients, health care professionals and the general public by disseminating information on the prevention and management of primary and secondary lymphedema.
 
National Patient Air Transport
The National Patient Air Transport Helpline (NPATH)  provides information and referral for people needing transportation to distant locations for specialized medical treatment, healthcare professionals seeking cost-effective ways to move patients and their families, and volunteer pilots interested in flying for public benefit.  This web site has links to air transport organizations as well as links to healthcare organizations that cooperate with NPATH.
 
Patient and Family Information
This section of the American Cancer Society's site contains information for cancer patients and their families, and covers topics such as finding a specialist,  getting a second opinion, talking with your doctor, and children and cancer.
 
National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship
The NCCS site contains information for cancer patients and survivors on finding cancer resources on the Internet, including links to survivorship programs.
 
 
Patient Advocate Foundation
The Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF) "provides education and legal counseling to cancer patients concerning managed care, insurance and financial issues."  Resources on this site include an online managed care guide for patients, as well as links to other patient advocacy organizations.
 
Coping with Cancer (OncoLink)
OncoLink's Coping with Cancer section covers such topics as cancer and sexuality, coping with loss, end of life issues, information for caregivers, pain management, spirituality, support groups, and survivor stories.
 
Ronald McDonald Houses Charities
Ronald McDonald Houses (RMH) provide a "home away from home" for the families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.  RMH Charities supports the Ronald McDonald Houses, and makes grants to other non-profit organizations who work with seriously ill children.  Information about these grants, including applications can be found on this site.  There is also a list of Ronald McDonald Houses world-wide.

Part of the Guide to Internet Resources for Cancer, this site has links to the web pages of over 80 cancer support groups in the U.S. and world wide.

This section of the Children's Cancer Web contains links to groups that provide support to children with cancer and to their families.
 
Support and Resources
The National Cancer Institute's support section contains a series of summaries of current information on research and development of cancer support resources.  There are also links to NCI's "What Do You Need to Know About Cancer" publications, information on managing side effects of cancer and cancer treatment, and an extensive list of organizations that offer services to cancer patients.  The site also contains a helpful article entitled "When someone in your family has cancer."
