About Phillip West

Phillip West, 1931 -- 1997
Phillip West, a Williamsburg, Virginia resident, had a recurrence of melanoma in May 1995, after a period of about 20 years.  He fought his cancer in every way possible before his death in August, 1997.  Throughout his illness, Mr. West sought medical information and resources concerning the treatment of melanoma, nutrition, stress management, and clinical trials available throughout the U.S.  He wanted to be an informed patient in order to feel he had some control over his course of treatment.  Finding resources in the community proved difficult and frustrating.  Mr. West bequeathed a donation to the Williamsburg Community Hospital, and it was the wish of his wife that it be used for cancer-related projects.  The Phillip West Memorial Cancer Resource Center was developed as a fitting tribute to him.  In order to foster community-wide support, the Resource Center was developed as a joint project between the Williamsburg Community Hospital and the Williamsburg Regional Library, and is located in both of the Williamsburg Regional Library's facilities.
