Do not be lulled into the idea that you do not fit the profile for breast cancer. It can happen to you. Having regular mammograms is essential. The 1 centimeter lump removed from my breast was spotted on the mammogram but could not be felt.

There is no history of cancer in my family, so like most women, I thought it wouldn't happen to me--but it did.  The earlier it is diagnosed, the better your chances of survival are.  The people you love need you. Get a mammogram!

Fortunately, the lump in my breast turned out to be benign, but it could just as easily been cancer. None of us are immune to breast cancer, no matter what age or race, so please get regular screenings. In Williamsburg we have a wonderful, state-of-the-art facility--the Women's Imaging Center--with competent, caring staff who will see you through the entire process.

Cancer does not discriminate against age, race, sex, or size. Life is a gift; so live every day as if it were your last. Be assertive with your own health screenings because no one will do a better job of looking after them than you.

I found a lump using breast self-exam. At age 34, I thought it was nothing... a cyst perhaps, but I didn't wait to convince myself it wasn't anything to worry about. I sought help and because I did, the cancer was found at an early stage. It is important to have regular exams because cancer can strike at any age.

The original display was exhibited in the Williamsburg and James City County libraries in the winter of 1999, under the sponsorship of the Williamsburg Regional Library's Phillip West Memorial Cancer Research Center. Groups interested in putting on similar displays should contact Janet Crowther, Director of Community Partnership Development, at 757-259-4066.
